Laboratory 1

Due Week 4

1. Purpose: to become familiar with the networking equipment

2. Equipment:

2 Computers with NIC cards
1 hub/switch
2 10baseT cables

4. Procedure:

a. Use the 6 computers in the telecomm lab. They are running NT Workstation. The password is "cn29021". On each computer, from the command line type "ping 127.0.0.1". Explain the purpose of this command. Record the result. If as predicted in class, proceed. Otherwise contact the lab manager for assistance.

b. Look up the users manual on the switch/hub you are using. Include as an attachment.

c. Using the cables, connect the two computers to a hub/switch. Use Network Neighborhood to verify connection.

d. Type "ipconfig /all" to determone the IP address of computers on each segment. Use "ping IP-address" to test connectivity.

e. From the command line, type "arp". Summarize output. Now type "arp -a". Explain what you see.

f. Disconnect the computers and type "arp -a". What occurs?

g. What problems did you have? How did you overcome them?

h. What did you learn from this lab? Write this up in detail. What can you do now that you could not do before?
